Falmouth Marine School Falmouth LEVEL: 5 Marine & Natural Environment

Located in one of the most beautiful coastal regions of the UK, this Falmouth-based programme provides a proven track record of success in developing the academic potential of students, which enables them to progress on to some of the most prestigious marine-based academic institutions in the world, or obtain employment within this expanding and exciting career path.

The newly constructed and equipped campus provides an almost unprecedented level of access to the diverse marine ecosystems of the South West peninsula. With subjects ranging from pelagic and benthic biology through to oceanography and marine resource management, the course provides an almost unique mix of field work, laboratory-based practicals and lectures delivered by experienced industry experts and innovative research scientists.
You will also have the opportunity to develop a range of non-academic practical skills that are often considered to be essential for progression, these range from diving, snorkelling and powerboat handling through to aquatic husbandry, photography and marine mammal observation. The newly equipped laboratories not only provide an excellent teaching environment, but the aquaria and aquatic systems they contain include a diverse range of aquatic species ranging from corals and carp through to sharks and seahorses.
There are also a number of residential and international field trips that enable you to gain practical skills and study in habitats that can vary from the sub-arctic through to coral reefs and mangroves.

At Falmouth Marine School we have brand new labs, coastline on our doorstep, industry experts on the staff team and the biggest teaching aquarium tank in the whole of the UK.
With aquaria containing species that vary from cuttlefish to sharks, an extensive range of sampling equipment and newly established marine laboratories, the marine school also offers an almost unprecedented range of facilities for its students.

Our unique location also gives each student access to an ‘outdoor’ classroom that consists of the unique and varied marine habitats that can be found just a few minutes walk from the campus. The town of Falmouth also offers an exciting mix of social and recreational opportunities that fulfils the requirements of its diverse student population.

There is a variety of field trips to locations including visits to:

  • The National Marine Aquarium
  • National Maritime Museum Cornwall
  • Gweek Seal Sanctuary
  • The Lobster Hatchery.

There are boat trips for sampling, rocky shore surveys, mudflat surveys and a week-long field trip decided on, organised and run by you and your fellow students.
