Leisure course tutor PROFILE

BSL tutors Jackie Bryant and Manda LambertBritish Sign Language Level 1 Award

Jackie and Manda are South West Region 2017 tutor award winners with the Festival of Learning. Jackie and Manda teach Level 1 and 2 British Sign Language (BSL) at Cornwall College. Both are profoundly deaf, have full time jobs, and passionately engage their students without communication barriers. BSL is Manda’s first language, so Jackie, who was the sole tutor for 7 years, was keen to share her colleague’s knowledge. After Manda completed Level 6, Jackie persuaded her to join her in class. Manda embarked on more learning, completing Education and Training Award Level 3 to develop her teaching skills. Together, they improved the students’ learning experiences with more visual and engaging methods, leading to increased participation. Some of their learners face a future with a deteriorating hearing loss, others are professionals working in health or education. Jackie and Manda provide meaningful and appropriate levels of study skills for each group and offer insight into how much can be achieved with limited or no hearing. Social interaction is encouraged to practise and develop individuals’ signing skills. Jackie and Manda created a group social media platform to provide additional support to students outside of college hours. “We introduce our deaf friends to the learners to give them more opportunities to use their BSL skills,” said Jackie. Manda said “Teaching has increased my confidence and developed my ability to interact with hearing people that I didn’t have before.” “Their hands-on method of teaching brings BSL to life and makes its application more immediate to those with little experience of deaf culture,” said nominator, Dawn Ferguson-Smith, Adult Community Learning Coordinator for Cornwall College . https://www.festivaloflearning.org.uk/award-winners/jackie-bryant-and-manda-lambert/
