An Introduction to Wildlife and Conservation

Level 1 • Part-time • Bicton College


NCFE Level 1 Award in Occupational Studies for the Workplace; (T/502/5142/UNIT). This short course is designed for mature students (19+) who have a passion and interest for British Wildlife and Conservation who wish to learn more about this subject and why it is an important part of the animal care industry. This short course is an introduction into wildlife and conservation which will enable learners to recognise a range of habitats and energy links between plants and animals. It will involve practical elements such as animal and plant surveys along with learning the theory such as understanding the climate and how this can affect the plant and animal life. Learners will also be looking at the food chain and how plants provide energy for the animals feeding behaviours. The course will examine wildlife conservation and terms associated with this as well as investigating a range of different habitat types and their characteristics. It will explore the influences on different sites such as population, pollution which will discuss how humans can impact wildlife and conservation efforts. It will go into detail about the producers, primary consumers, secondary consumer and tertiary consumer and how the change in population effects the consumers and what this might mean. It is important to understand the process of decomposition and how this works in relation to the “natural clean up” when exploring conservation efforts. In order for the learner to successfully complete this course it will involve some independent learning to full fill the commitment of the course and it will be assessed through the completion of a portfolio of evidence and this will also include some practical aspect such as habitat surveys. On completion of this course you will have completed a level 1 in wildlife conservation which will lead will give you a basic understanding of this animal care filed of study and a stepping stone onto future courses.

Promoting Wellbeing

This course will help provide some useful tips and activities you can do from home to promote wellbeing. This is particularly important as we cope with the current circumstances and the stress of daily life. There is strong evidence that indicates that feeling close to, and valued by, other people is a fundamental human need and one that contributes to functioning well in the world.

Creative Craft Floristry Designs

Level 1 • Part-time • Bicton College


If you love flowers and want to use your creativity to learn how to create a beautiful selection of arrangements and hand tied designs this is the perfect course for you. A short course to improve the basic floristry skills you have previously learnt. You will get to identify and use various different tools, equipment and materials whilst creating a range of designs that will go towards a final portfolio.

Construction Diploma

Level 1 • Full-time • Bicton College


Land based, work based plant operations Level 1 is the course if you want an overall introduction to the construction industry and most importantly heavy plant operations. You will have the opportunity to carry out a number of construction tasks using plant ranging from 1.5 ton mini excavators up to 14 ton 360 degree tracked excavators and if that’s not enough you will also receive introductory training using 6 ton high vis forward tipping dumpers and telescopic handlers. Literally getting in at ground level, gaining the experience to develop your skills before progressing on to the level 2 course and gaining your CPCS certificate for professional operators. During the course you will be trained and given the opportunity to gain your CPCS operators Health and safety card which is the first step and an essential requirement to gain access and open door to a host of opportunities in the construction industry. As a trainee operator you will be involved initially in basic excavation trenching etc. then progressing onto more complex excavations for example structural foundations and service boxes. All training will be delivered to the high standards required By the Construction industry training board. Bicton College is in the fortunate position to be in partnership with Holt JCB, this allows students access to the range of the most up to date machines currently available.

The Learning Centres (LCs) offer a range of resources, facilities and support for your studies In each Learning Centre you will find a range of resources and staff who can help with:
• Finding and using books, ebooks and journals
• Support for developing your study and research skills, including using the Internet for research and avoiding plagiarism
• Help with using college computers and software
We have a network of 9 learning centres across our campuses, resources can be sourced from all.

Opening times:
Monday, Wednesday and Friday 9am – 5pm (term-time)
Tuesday and Thursday 9am – 7pm (term-time)
Varied opening hours during half terms and holidays.

Residential Accommodation

We understand that feeling settled within your environment gives you a much better chance of enjoying your course. We offer 231 beds, situated on the Bicton College campus. Layouts include two/three bed shared rooms with a shared facilities, single room with shared bathroom facilities and ensuite room. All blocks have common rooms. We also have rooms and facilities adapted for students with disabilties.

Bicton’s dedicated Residential Services Team support students in all areas of accommodation, counselling, careers guidance, enrichment activities, funding and transport. We will endeavour to make your time here a truly great experience, both in and outside the classroom.

Evolve Sport, Fitness & Outdoors

Students are able to take part in free and subsidised sporting and recreational activities. Our College Sportsmaker arranges a varied timetable of activities each term.

The facilities include, 4 court sports hall, football pitches, climbing tower, lake for watersports, orienteering course, and a fitness suite. The College also has a golf putting green and swing studio and employs a full time golf professional.
Sporting activities include; hockey, netball, football, kayaking, horse riding, climbing, running, fitness classes, archery, lacrosse, racket sports, dodgeball and more.

Equestrian Centre

The Equestrian Centre provides excellent facilities for full and part-time students and external customers. These include an extended 20m x 61m indoor arena with a Wax Pro surface with mirrors, gallery seating for 148 people, two state of the art teaching rooms, judging areas and staff offices/reception area. In addition there is a 30 x 60 Outdoor arena, 2 full sets of show jumps, Music and PA system, XC-Schooling field, Walker, Weighbridge and Solarium. There are 2 separate yards consisting of 14 traditional stables adjacent to the Indoor School and 24 internal loose boxes in an American Style Barn.
We offer a range of Livery options, from Working Livery to Full Livery.

Animal Management Centre

Animal students at Bicton College have access to an extensive animal mangement centre on campus, which includes meerkats, coati, an exotics room, a two-storey marmoset monkey enclosure and an aquarium, along with access to the resources at Dartmoor Zoo

Bicton college Home Farm

Bicton’s Home Farm was purchased in 1947 and over the years it has developed into a thriving educational facility and working farm.

The farm’s core objectives are:
To provide state-of-the-art resources for education and practical training.
To generate a financial surplus for re-investment.
To show efficient methods of production and demonstrate leading practices in land use.
To provide Devon’s agricultural industry with innovative and sustainable pathways for the future.

The College farm is run commercially with the aim of producing above average husbandry results and financial returns. A range of practicals and activities are offered to meet the work experience and academic needs of the students undertaking studies in agriculture. Students undertake regular periods of work experience and practical instruction on the units, enabling them to gain a wide appreciation of the differing sectors of agriculture.
