Hospitality and Professional Cookery students at Cornwall College Saltash have spent the day with members of The Royal Air Force (RAF) Recruitment and Engagement Team discussing the range of careers available, attending mock interviews and taking part in a number of role play scenarios.

The Interview Skills Workshop and Personal Development Training sessions aim to challenge students to consider their employment futures by linking key personal qualities such as teamwork, leadership and communication, to their own experiences both inside and outside college, and then communicating this in interviews for employment, apprenticeships or university.

Student, Josh Burke, said: “Before today I didn’t know too much about the RAF, I expected it to be about flying planes. I have learnt there are lots of different jobs available within the RAF and team work and communication skills are really important. I feel I have improved my communication skills from today.”

Sgt Craig Ainslie, from RAF Careers, said: “On behalf of Royal Air Force Recruiting and Engagement I would like to thank Cornwall College Saltash for inviting us to work with their Catering students. We could not have been more pleased with the level 1 and level 2 students on the day; their maturity, enthusiasm and positive attitude towards the sessions were outstanding, furthermore the awareness and ownership displayed of their individual personal development was refreshing to see at such an early age. A lot of credit must also be accredited to the staff, who’s infectious enthusiasm and passionate approach to teaching is reflected by the students.”

Sgt Craig Ainslie, continued: “We would like to wish all participants on the day the very best with their future careers, they are a huge credit to the college, their parents/guardians and most importantly themselves and our door is always open if they would like to discuss career opportunities in the Royal Air Force.”

Chris Penk, Team Lead for Hospitality and Professional Cookery at Cornwall College Saltash, said: “Today has been great for our students, the personal development training and interview skills learnt highlight to them areas they may feel they need to improve on to succeed in interviews for any role in industry. Being able to link in with employers like the RAF is invaluable for our students, it was brilliant to see them engaging and enjoying the day.”
