Budding entrepreneurs in Cornwall are being given the opportunity to research and set up their own business, whilst getting expert support and a recognised qualification.  The new BTEC in Business at Cornwall College Camborne, which will be launched in September 2016, will enable students to research and plan their own business during their first year.

Then in the second year of the course students will be able to launch their business, whilst being given expert support from lecturers and members of local industry.  The unique course has been designed in consultation with a number of UK universities and will cover management, marketing, finance and law.

Team Lead for Business Studies at Cornwall College Camborne, Dr Bryan Mills, said, “This new and exciting course is quite unique; the Diploma in Business will enhance student skills to help build a solid foundation in business related specialisms.

“It will enable us to nurture their entrepreneurial spirit; give them the right amount of support and prepare them for either work or higher education.   We already have great success with degree courses, helping hundreds of students graduate each year and this BTEC is a great place to start.”

A recent study from Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) claims that more students than ever are studying BTEC courses as opposed to A-levels, to gain entry to Higher Education.

Applicants for this new business BTEC don’t need to have studied business previously to join, but must have successfully completed a BTEC Level 2 in any subject.  The new BTEC will give learners the opportunity to change direction if their current course is not right for them, or if they know they want a career in the world of business and enterprise.

Miriam Venner, Head of Campus, Cornwall College Camborne added, “For anyone wanting to enter the world of business with a recognised qualification, this new offering is perfect.  Not only does it cover all the basic core modules but there are also optional units for students to specialise in.  This route allows learners to progress onto degree courses in business like our new BA (Hons) in Business Management and an excellent way to kick-start a professional career.”
