Falmouth Marine School students celebrated the recent announcement that Falmouth has been voted the best coastal town in the Great British High Street awards.

Rhea Walters commented: “What a great achievement for Falmouth. I moved here to study because it looked like such a lovely place and where better to study Marine Science than here. The wildlife on the doorstep is incredible; I have seen Dolphins, Seals, Seahorses and a Minke Whale, to name a few.

Marine Science student Meg Hayward-Smith set up Falmouth first Marine Conservation group. She commented: “This is fantastic news for Falmouth. The award is based on collaboration and I can say from personal experience of setting up the Marine Conservation group that that is definitely the case.”

Meg continued: “Falmouth is a beautiful area and has rich marine biodiversity which people come from far and wide to visit. With an increasing amount people visiting and living in the area it’s a great opportunity to promote marine conservation and with this award, I am hoping to gain even more support for the initiative.”

Marine Science students regularly participate in survey work on and around the Falmouth coast. Student Jonas Clay said: “Studying Marine Science in Falmouth provides a fantastic opportunity to gain field experience, without having to travel miles. It’s a perfect learning experience, using the outside classroom that hosts a huge range of ecosystems; there really is no better place to study Marine Science in the UK.”
