Two former Duchy College Military Academy students, Charlie Hawken and Jack Stanley, who are now in the Army, have visited new students at Duchy College to pass on their knowledge. The former students spoke to the learners about training and how the course had helped them prepare, they also joined in with the physical training.

Military Academy student, Beth Connolly, said: “The course is really helping me prepare for my career in the Army and having the students who have done the course come in really helps to make the point, it shows us how much the course helps us.”

Charlie Hawken has just completed his phase 1 training at the Army Foundation College, Harrogate and is about to start his trade training to become a Mechanic in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME).

Charlie said: “I found my time at the Army Foundation College, Harrogate, much easier thanks to the course.  I would say that the gun run and mud run that the students do here at Duchy College is as tough, if not tougher than those I did in training.  The course really helped me prepare for the forces.”

Jack Stanley is serving in the Parachute Regiment, The Paras.  He has completed the Combat Infantryman Course at Catterick and successfully passed this and the infamous “P Company” to earn the Maroon Beret.  He has just come back from an exercise with the US Army in Louisiana and is about to do his parachute course for his “wings”.

Jack said: “Without this course I would not have pushed myself to achieve the high standards of fitness required for the Parachute Regiment; it also prepared me for the discipline and routine.”

Military Academy student, Owen Martin, said: “It is good to see that the course really works; I knew it was good before I came here but meeting former students that are now in the forces really shows how good it is.”

Lecturer for Military Academy at Duchy Stoke, Jon Stone, said: “It is always good to have former students in, who have benefitted from the course and are now having a successful career in the Armed Forces.  It really does help to validate the course for the learners.”
