HUNDREDS OF LOCALS ENJOY AUTUMN FAIR

Cornwall College St Austell event

With the weather playing ball, St Austell’s inaugural Autumn Fair delighted everyone who attended.

Held at Cornwall College St Austell, highlights included the St Austell Fire and Rescue Brigade giving a dramatic recreation of a car crash scene, stalls showcasing a range of local organisations and crafters, and the Mediaeval village cardboard village constructed in the Keay Theatre.

John Sleeman from St Austell brought his sons Charlie and Jack to the Fair and they spent the day building an impressive cardboard castle on the stage in the theatre.

“We love to build things at home, so getting the chance to construct a castle on this scale has been brilliant,” John explained.

“There’s so much going on and I really didn’t realise the range of subjects they offer at the college. It’s important to show the fun side of education and I think my boys have learnt a lot about what’s available to them for the future.”

The pick of the bunch was the Produce Show, where a fantastic selection of vegetables, fruit, jams and cakes were entered into the competition to win prizes.

Everyone was ‘rooting’ for Bob Gardiner who turned up at the show with a van full of his homegrown vegetables for the competition – Bob was not disappointed and came away winning first place in six of the classes.

Local residents were not the only ones to enjoy the day as their animals played a part, with a selection of prized pooches entered for the dog show.

The lucky winners came away with a trophy in their awarding class made by students in the engineering department.

Head of Campus, Chris Taylor said the day was “a complete success”.

“There was so much going on at the site for the community to get involved with; we had seven-year-olds building walls in our construction area, mums having a quick facial in the beauty department and local dance groups showing off their talents in the studios – there was certainly something for everyone,” he continued.

“We’ve already started the planning for next years fair and are looking forward to making it an annual event, I’ve even ordered the good weather again!”
