Local artist, Susan Jacks, has visited Vocational and Work Related Studies students at Cornwall College Saltash teaching them different art techniques and passing on her skills. Susan, who lives on Bodmin Moor and sells her paintings at Fowey River Gallery, has been painting for as long as she can remember.

Students were mark making and exploring non-conventional art equipment. They were given only one colour, black ink, and had to create tone.

Student, Kate Jenkins, said: “The art session with Susan was really good. I learnt lots, especially how to express myself through different ways of art. I really enjoyed it.”

Artist Susan Jacks said: “I really enjoyed working with the students who were a mix of ages and abilities. I was really impressed with how open they were to the idea of looking at art in different ways. The purpose was to let go of pencils and formal ways of art. These students have done a fantastic job, much better than a high end art group would do, I’m really moved with how well they have done today.”

Team Lead for Vocational and Work Related Studies at Saltash, Michelle Lobb, said: “Having Susan come in today was a brilliant opportunity for our learners to interact with an artist currently working in the industry.  Susan enabled our learners to expand upon their ideas allowing them to create some truly unique pieces of art work.  This experience allows our learners to see how the options they choose for their course can support them to achieve their desired career path.”
