A marathon 12-hour 5-a-side football match for charity saw the winning team win by 374 goals to 369.

Students and Staff from Cornwall College kicked off a fantastic effort to the fundraising of a Cardiac Screening Event at the College, which will be held in 2018.

A total of £3500 is required for Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY), where a screening unit is to come to St Austell in 2018. Every week in the UK at least 12 apparently fit and healthy young people die of undiagnosed cardiac conditions.

Luke Appleton, Student Liaison Manager for Cornwall College said the event was a “real test of endurance” for students and particularly the staff.

“All of the money raised will support hosting a two-day Cardiac Screening event at St Austell College, this will be open to anyone under the age of 35 and even if one person is referred then it would have been well worth it,” he continued.

“Everyone who took part gave their all and it was great to see that staff who had teaching commitments were able to come down and take part for a few hours, we certainly needed all the help we could get!”

The score was close throughout with there being no more than 15 goals between the two teams for the majority of the day, but in the end, youth prevailed over experience with the final score being 369-374 to the students.

Sport Student Ollie Burt said the “footballathon was a very challenging yet rewarding experience for all who took part”.

“The game was played in good spirits and it was good to see the amount of work both staff and students put in for a very worthy cause. I think a lot of us underestimated how long 12 hours of football was, and we were all definitely feeling sore the next day but it was 100% worth it.”

Although the final figure that was raised is yet to be confirmed the fundraising teams are on track for the £1000 target set for this event.
