Bicton College and Duchy College are celebrating a new partnership with Synergy Farm Health, who provide a complete veterinary service to all farm animals. The partnership has resulted in the creation of an exclusive new Level 3 dairy apprenticeship programme, starting this September.

Delivered from Lower Coombe, near Crewkerne in Somerset, the apprenticeship will cover a variety of topics, including welfare and biosecurity, nutrition, milking routine, mastitis, lameness, fertility, calf rearing, dry cow management and common health problems.

Allowing apprentices to earn while they learn, this Level 3 qualification is a great next step for those who are already working in agriculture, or those who wish to pursue a career in the dairy industry.

Roger Clarke, Work-Based Agriculture Team Lead at Bicton College and Duchy College, said: “We have an in-house apprenticeship recruitment team, who are able to match potential apprentices with employers, and likewise help employers who would like to upskill their existing employees via an apprenticeship, with funding and mentoring, so we urge both apprentices and employers to get in touch”.

Peter Reed, Agriculture Programme Manager at both colleges, who has worked closely with Synergy Farm Health to develop this exciting new partnership, added: “We are very much looking forward to welcoming the first cohort of apprentices in September. The knowledge and facilities that they will have access to via Synergy Farm Health are second-to-none, and will be of huge benefit to both the apprentices and their employers. Focusing on welfare, maximising outputs and prevention rather than cure, this new dairy apprenticeship programme will help farms to secure a sustainable future”.

Ed Powell-Jackson, lead vet on the teaching delivered by Synergy Farm Health said “We are very excited about this new initiative and were delighted to be asked to partner Bicton College in the training of a new crop of young dairy professionals.”

“As a farm animal only veterinary practice we are whole heartedly committed to the future development of the dairy industry, “added Ed.

“Our involvement in this programme, along with our well established teaching programmes for both farmers and final year vet students, will allow us to help train the dairy work force of tomorrow.”
