New university students in Newquay have been given an insight into local businesses and services thanks to a Fresher’s Fair.

Cornwall College Newquay’s Student Union hosted the event, which also gave new arrivals the chance to explore the campus and get a first taste of university life.

In addition to sampling a range of cakes, the Zoology, Surf and Marine Science students got to play a complementary game of laser tag and take advantage of the range of promotional offers from the town’s clubs and bars.
Several charities and conservation groups were also on hand to provide information on the various volunteering opportunities available locally.

Cornwall College Student Liaison Manager Luke Appleton said: “The Fresher’s Fair is always a great event and this year was a lot of fun. As many of our students have a strong interest in conservation, wildlife and the marine environment, we try to use the Fresher’s Fair as an opportunity for them to establish links with charities and volunteer groups in the area. It’s about encouraging our students to take advantage of the positive opportunities available to them as a supplement to their studies.”

Several exhibitors were present to speak to students and distribute information including The Wave Project, Newquay Marine Group, Your Shore Beach Rangers, First Kernow, Healthwatch Cornwall and St Francis Dogs Home.

Student Liaison Officer Abi Stokes from Cornwall College Newquay who organises the event, said: “I would like to thank everyone who made this year’s Fresher’s Fair such a success, including all the stallholders and businesses who generously donated cakes and tombola prizes. Having all the exhibitors at the campus really gives our new students a brilliant welcome and the freebies that they all generously donated were a huge hit. I hope that it gave the students a good start to their college life, we’re all looking forward to a great year.”
