A sports employer and alumni fair has been praised for providing insights into the range of careers available after completing a sports qualification.
Nine former Sport and PE students, which included local teachers, coaches, sport coordinators and therapists – were invited up to Cornwall College St Austell to talk about their career journey. The current first and second-year sport students were tasked with questioning four employers and finding out what they did to get where they are today.
Anne-Marie Keast who is the Primary Stars Officer at Plymouth Argyle Football Club said she “really enjoyed the experience”.
“It was nice to visit the college again after five years to give the students advice and confidence that if they work hard there are some fantastic opportunities to be had. I’m also looking forward to giving students volunteer opportunity to gain experience.”
Anne-Marie added that the club had employed over twenty coaches across Cornwall in the last twelve months alone, five of which were former Cornwall College students.
“This demonstrates that there are fantastic employment opportunities within sports coaching in Cornwall at the moment,” she added.
Toby Garner a first year student said was impressed with “insight into the range of careers” available within the sports industry.
“It’s given me some great ideas about where I would like to progress with my own career,” he added.
Team Lead for Sport & Fitness, Mark Ferguson-Smith said; “This is the third year we have arranged this event and definitely our most successful year. All of the attendees were former college students and I hope that it has inspired and motivated our current cohort.
Mark additionally gave his thanks to the former students for giving up their time to meet and share their experiences with the students.
