Sports students complete coaching award

Six Sports Students recently took part in a Cornwall Sports Partnership funded scheme known as the Activators Programme. The students completed this alongside their coaching award and have gone on to gain paid work in the sports community around St Austell.

Team Lead for Sport at Cornwall College St Austell, Mark Ferguson-Smith said “I’m really proud of the students for their professional and dedicated approach to leading and coaching during their time as sport students here at the college.

“The progress they have made as coaches is demonstrable as they have now secured part-time employment in a very competitive sector. I’m sure they will continue to develop as leaders and coaches as they progress onto university or into employment.”

The Activators Programme requires students to volunteer as leaders and officials at community sports events such as Primary School cross country, tag rugby and athletics festivals. In return the Activators are given £100 towards an NGB level 1 coaching qualification.

The students have also completed their Level 1 FA Football Coaching Award and subsequently have sourced some paid coaching work within the local community. This work is with two flourishing coaching providers; The Cornish Cricket Company and Charlestown Youth Soccer Camp.

Founder of Charlestown Youth Soccer Camp (CYSC), Matt Boynton said “we are always looking for young, enthusiastic coaches, which is why we offered the College students an opportunity to come and work with us. The College Students that we have worked with have shown great levels of commitment, work ethic and attitude towards coaching and we look forward to continuing to work with them in the future.

Proprietor of The Cornish Cricket Company, Sean Hooper also added; “We’ve been working with student Fergus Connolly and he has worked with us in the school and elite coaching environments, observing a number of experienced and high quality coaching professionals in action. He has also demonstrated competence in organising activities and pupils and always been keen to take on board feedback offered.”
