College students have been helping to kick start a healthier outlook on exercise with a local school.
The group of student fitness instructors, all studying for a personal training qualification at Cornwall College St Austell, have been working with Year 9 students from Poltair School on fitness- and skill-based activities.
The weekly sessions, delivered at the school, offer the College students an opportunity to focus on the practical application of personal training in an industry-relevant manner, according to Sport Lecturer Louise Fletcher.
“Students had the opportunity to apply theory to practice as they would do when working in industry. It is a unique and brilliant opportunity for learners to develop their personal training skills on real life clients,” she continued.
“Current jobs in the sporting and fitness industry ask for experience of working with clients as well as sport science training methods specific to personal individual needs. This gives them that stepping stone to work towards those sorts of industry jobs which working in a classroom alone will not give. It is a real life experience taking practice out of the classroom.”
The Poltair students chose to participate in the programme as an option for an after school club. The sessions themselves include a variety of activities focusing on the pupils sporting interests including skill related fitness for sports such as football, rugby and netball. It also includes conditioning work in the gym in the form of cardiovascular work and muscular strength and endurance.
Student Chloe Demouy, who is training to be a personal trainer, said: “For most of us it is our first experience at training someone and it was absolutely amazing to have the chance to do it! From this experience I get a realistic view of how things are done, from going through the paper work with our student, planning sessions adapted to their need and goals to deliver these sessions. I feel very lucky to work with kids who are really keen to participate as they are all amazing to work with. It couldn’t have been better!”
