A FORMER sports student from The Cornwall College Group (TCCG) who aspired to a career mixing teaching and football has turned that dream into reality as he has spent the last eighteen months with Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs).

Ben Spaul, who studied his Sports Coaching and Development degree and PGCE at Cornwall College St Austell, is currently employed as a PE teacher and a coach for Spurs where he teaches GCSE and A-level PE to the club’s year 10 and 12 students and during half terms he works for the club’s foundation coaching throughout the community.

The 23-year-old said: “Sport has always been a massive part of my life, whether that has been through education or playing socially. I studied a BTEC course in sport first which made me want to further my knowledge of the industry and led me onto the degree at St Austell. I then progressed to the PGCE, which then allowed me to put my previous knowledge surrounding sport together with my past experiences in helping other young adults.

“Being employed by Tottenham Hotspur has been a massive opportunity for me, working with such a big business and working within a football club. It’s my dream job, mixing teaching and football together.

“The best things about working for the club are the endless opportunities here for me and the students. The students are a pleasure to work with and the facilities are outstanding. I look forward to going into work every day knowing that each day will bring a new challenge and that’s something that motivates me as a teacher.”

The degree Ben studied at St Austell is designed with the UK Coaching Certificate guidelines at its core so students are engaged in the advancement of their coaching ability while gaining their qualification.

He added: “I spent four amazing years at St Austell which allowed me to make some best friends, good relationships, a lot of laughter and memories which I will never forget. The sports department in particular were brilliant, they are some of the best people and teachers I have ever met and helped me massively to get to where I am now. The correct information was passed on to me when in specific lectures, which is important as I am now passing that information on to the students that I teach every day.”

Currciulum Lead for Sport across The Cornwall College Group, Kym O’Mara, said: “Ben was a pleasure to teach at St Austell and I always knew he would go on to pursue his passion in life. At TCCG we always encourage students to be the best they can in their subject and through our partnerships with schools, communities and training partners, together we nurture individual potential by valuing and extending learner aspiration, experience and skills.”
