A local student is hanging up his chef whites to head for a career in the military.
Level 2 Professional Cookery student at Cornwall College Saltash, James Markes, who lives in Plymouth, has been selected to join the infantry regiment The Rifles.
“I feel so proud to be selected, I’m really excited to start the training,” James said.
James will be based at the Infantry Training Centre Catterick (ITC Catterick), which trains all the Army’s infantrymen, for 28 weeks.
“The Army has always been an interest of mine, but I only started to really consider it as a career about three years ago,” James continued.
“There are 10 different specialisations you can go on to focus on, at training you gain experience in everything, so at the moment I am keeping my options open.
“I feel my time at Cornwall College Saltash has taught me so many skills which will be really useful to me throughout my new career, especially organisational skills, that is key. The experience I have had at college has been fantastic. The facilities we have for the Professional Cookery course, both the kitchens and our new restaurant, Dynnargh, are second to none.”
Curriculum Lead for Professional Cookery and Hospitality at Cornwall College Saltash, Chris Penk, said it is “fantastic to be able to support James in joining the Army”.
