A group of local students have impressed the organisers at Plymouth Seafood Festival after assisting a host of top guest chefs.

Celebrity chef, Jacques Marchall, said the team of students from Cornwall College Saltash that attended the Seafood Festival, “were attentive, well-mannered and worked really hard throughout the weekend”.

The students were put to work and helped with preparing, cleaning, cooking and demoing their culinary skills on the main stage.

Returning Professional Cookery student, James Markes, said the Sea Food Festival was “once again a great event”.

“We got to see close up what the chefs cooked and their techniques,” he continued.

“It was great to be able to demonstrate the skills I learnt on stage last year at this event.”

Former Torpoint Community College student, Ashleigh Simons, who is studying Level 2 Professional Cookery, said he “really enjoyed” working with different chefs at the Sea Food Festival while learning new techniques.

“It is great to have these industry contacts so early on in our course,” he said.

“I am really enjoying the course, I would definitely recommend it to others looking to get into the industry.”

Curriculum Lead for Hospitality and Professional Cookery at Cornwall College Saltash, Chris Penk, said the opportunity to work with “all the top chefs in our area is so inspiring for our students.”

“The experience gained is immeasurable, we are so proud of the way our young chefs supported the event and the professionalism and enthusiasm displayed was fantastic.”

“Continuing our links with Plymouth City Council enforces our ability to offer our students the best all round experience within Plymouth and Cornwall.”

The students are now taking their new found skills back to college to demonstrate in the new restaurant, Dynnargh, which has recently opened to the public.
