Student builders in Cornwall are celebrating winning the South West regional heat of a prestigious national competition.

The Regional SkillBuild Roofing Heats took place at Cornwall College St Austell last week, where St Austell students were joined by competitors from South Devon College and Exeter.

Both the St Austell Students who entered had a great competition with Sam Blount taking first place and Ben Hayley a very close second.

Judging took place throughout the six-hour competition and the students had to meet specific standards in underlay, battening, tiling, health and safety and working methods.

Sam Blount said “it went fantastically well”.

“We’re both really chuffed with winning first and second place,” he continued.

“Having taken part in this competition before meant we knew what to expect this time so we worked faster this year with plenty of time to spare.”

Once all the heats across the country have taken place, Sam and Ben will find out if they have qualified for the National Finals, which are held at the NEC in November.

Jon Edwards the students lecturer said he was “really proud” of them both.

“What a fantastic way to have ended the college year, I really hope they both make it through to the finals,” he added.

Both Sam and Ben are apprentices and have been studying for their diplomas in roof slating and tiling alongside working for local companies; Graham Barker Roofing and M.A.R Roofing.

Director of Technology across the Cornwall College Group, Justin Olosunde said he was “absolutely delighted” with the result and is extremely hopeful that they will go to the nationals and potentially the international competition.

“It’s an outstanding result that proves the quality and commitment that our lecturers put into their teaching so that students are fine craftsmen and women when they complete their training with us,” he continued.

Justin added he wanted to say a “big thanks to our sponsor Redland who supplied all the tiles used in this competition today.”
