Students take first place at Torchlight Carnival

Published: November 22, 2019

Students from Cornwall College St Austell have won first prize for their incredible entry at this year’s Torchlight Carnival.

Student artists, designers, actors and dancers from the College’s Creative Academy worked collaboratively to create their prize-winning contribution to the annual carnival, which is always a highlight of the St Austell cultural calendar.

Torchlight Carnival Coordinator Shelia Vanloo said it was brilliant to have students from Cornwall College participating in the Torchlight once again.

“Their entry was incredible and they danced from start to finish. Everyone is talking about the amazing dragon and we were all blown away by the students’ work,” she added.

The student’s impressive entry to the carnival was a twenty foot dragon, crafted by Art & Design students from recycled materials including wire netting scales made of fabric taken from airplane filter systems.

Art & Design Lecturer Trudi Port felt “immensely proud of the incredible effort” that her students put in.

“An enormous amount of physical work, patience, and endurance was involved as the dragon itself was over 20 feet long and had to be strong, sturdy; yet graceful and beautiful,” Trudi explained.

Many onlookers praised the students on their commitment during the procession to ensure that the dragon sustained an energetic dance rhythm throughout the entire hour of the festival.

“The students’ engagement in this project has really enabled them to appreciate what it feels like to work as a team for an end goal,” Trudi continued.

“Winning was just the cherry on the cake, and it felt so exciting for everyone who had participated.”

Nineteen-year-old student Sabina Smurthwaite from St Austell had “an amazing time” walking in the parade.

“The atmosphere was like a carnival and it was very rewarding to hear children shout ‘Dragon!’ in excitement as we approached,” she explained.

“We were all in great spirits and due to the incredible organisation and help from everyone- everything ran very smoothly to create a truly unforgettable experience.”
