Students studying in Falmouth have taken to an inland wave to learn about surf and marine sports science degrees in Cornwall.

Watersports students from Falmouth Marine School were taken to the FlowRider at Retallack Resort and Spa to learn about degree-level courses in Marine Sports Science and Surf Science with Cornwall College Newquay.

Student Rebekah Hosking, 17, who previously went to Mullion School, said she thoroughly enjoyed the experience of surfing on the machine.

“I have never considered doing a degree before, but now I know about it, I will apply once I have some work experience in the industry,” she explained.

Rebekah was offered an interview with Loe Beach Watersports centre at Falmouth Marine School’s Industry Day event.

“I am hoping to get a job at Loe Beach and gain some experience in the industry.  My plan is to then work aboard with Neilson or Voyager in Greece or France and now to possibly return and continue with my education,” Rebekah added.

Another student that plans to work abroad and then return to complete his degree studies is Tom Tripconey, 20, from Helston.

“I think it’s really important to keep your options open,” he said.

“I want to work abroad when I complete my course but I will definitely consider coming back to do a degree as I want to enter management and the courses at Newquay are perfect to help me to do that.”

Tom said the visit to FlowRider was “really fun, but informative”.

“We all got to have a go on the FlowRider and then meet with students on the courses at Newquay and some of the lecturers,” he added.

Programme Manager Hannah Mason said “it’s really important that the students make informed choices about their future and are aware of all the opportunities available to them”.

“Last week they met with employers and were offered jobs during our annual Industry Day event and this week they explored the benefits of continuing their education at degree level,” she added.
