Students from Cornwall and Devon have experienced a sports tour of a lifetime involving Premier League football, national basketball finals and a host of other activities.

Aimed at providing a comprehensive insight into the wide range of careers available in the sports industry, students from Duchy College and Cornwall College St Austell travelled to Manchester, Burnley and Birmingham as part of the five day tour.

Team Lead for Sport at Duchy College, Darren Evans said the tour “is a great opportunity for our students to experience the different working environments that sport has to offer”.

“The football and basketball matches gave them some brilliant examples of the various job roles that are needed behind the scenes to make the events successfully happen,” he continued.

“Every year our sports tour provides an opportunity for our learners to experience professional sport, visit some famous sporting attractions and travel to major cities in the UK, all of which are extremely valuable experiences as they look to progress to university or into employment in the sports sector.”

The students attended the Premier League clash between Burnley against Southampton before attending the BBL basketball cup final at the Barclaycard Arena.

They had incredible seats for an exciting competition between Newcastle Eagles against Leicester Riders, plus Britain’s Got Talent’s ‘Flawless’ gave a spectacular dance performance during halftime.

The tour also saw the students participating and exploring a range of activities and events; including paintballing, a trip to the indoor snow park and a visit to world’s biggest football museum, The National Football Museum in Manchester.

Former Holsworthy School student Coya Ingram, who is now studying a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport at Duchy College, said the sports tour “was one of many highlights of my college experience”.

“As well as being exciting and fun, it gave me the chance to look at lots of different sectors of the sports industry and these experiences developed my knowledge of sport as a whole. I am really enjoying the course, Duchy is a great place to study.” he added.
