The Cornwall College Group (TCCG) aims to provide a comprehensive careers service with tailored interactions enabling students to engage proactively in decisions about their future career journey. Working within a pro-active team of Careers Advisors, Employability & Work Experience Co-ordinators and Personal Learning Advisors supporting students to make well informed decisions about training, education, work options alongside an understanding of their own potential which will develop their employability and long term contribution to both the local and national labour markets. This free and confidential service is for potential, current and past students and is available all year round at all.
What is careers advice?
This is the process of educating students to manage their own career decisions by giving them the tools to understand and implement their own progression pathway through the tailoring of advice and information. The setting of achievable goals, identifying potential barriers, the management of expectations and the raising of aspirations are embedded into all aspects of the service.
Information & Advice
The TCCG Careers Team offer a comprehensive information and advice service through various channels of communication including email, Skype, telephone and face to face appointments. All members of the team are qualified to at least level 4 in Information Advice & Guidance.
High quality, independent careers guidance is crucial when supporting students leaving college into employment or higher education and enabling them to leaving more grounded and ready for the world of work. All guidance work is undertaken by level 6 qualified Careers Advisors.
All our Careers Team have a working knowledge of the Gatsby Benchmark process and members of the team are involved in the evaluation of TCCG provision on a site by site basis. Current activity involves:
- Linking curriculum learning to careers
- Employers encounters
- Educational encounters
- Ensuring curriculum staff are aware of Gatsby benchmarks
TCCG is also Matrix accredited. This means that we have been assessed as an organisation in the quality of information and advice we provide to our learner and you can expect to receive a high standard of service from us about your future career or learning pathway. We are always looking at ways to develop our service and would welcome feedback. You will be provided with the opportunity to complete a paper feedback or online survey which is anonymous.
The Careers & Progression Advisors are peripatetic but based at our two main campuses at St Austell and Camborne with regular visits to all other campuses. The Careers Team is based in the Learning Centre at Camborne and St Austell with regular bulletins sent to tutors and students with times and dates of visits to other sites.

St Austell 8.30am – 5pm
Camborne 8.30am – 5pm
Evening appointments and non-term time bookings outside of these times are available and arranged on an individual basis.
Confidentiality, Safeguarding & Record Keeping
The Careers Service is confidential and will not pass on personal information about a client or student to anyone outside the organisation subject to the following exceptions:
- Where the student has given consent to disclose the information
- If an Adviser would be liable to civil or criminal court procedure if the information was not disclosed
- Where an Adviser believes the student or client or another person to be in danger and poses a safeguarding risk to themselves or others
If referring a student to an external organisation (e.g University, Admissions Tutor, Benefits Agency or Local Education Authority) the student will always be consulted and no action will be taken without their permission.
We aim to make each student enquiry as easy as possible. When making an appointment please mention what your additional requirements are and we will endeavour to meet those needs.
The Careers Team will offer impartial advice at all times and signpost students and clients to the most appropriate provision to meet their needs.
The Careers Team work in open plan spaces which can easily be accessed by students who have a quick query.
Students can also access a full 1:1 appointment with a qualified member of the team. The interviews will range from 30 – 60 minutes. The appointments are arranged through the college staff or students can refer themselves directly to the team. We have dedicated email addresses that the students can use to request appointments.
The interventions cover three main areas which will link inextricably to employability, opportunities available within the local and national jobs market and where there are identified skills shortages. These employability based appointments cover:
- Explorations – building a picture of current thinking and situation
- New Understanding – finding solutions, deciding goals
- Action – what to do to achieve agreed goals
The Careers Team also run a wide range of workshops which are booked by the tutors and delivered to meet deadlines and agreed schedules.
